More compact even than small electric runabouts like the Hyundai Kona electric and Kia Niro EV, Volvo’s 2025 EX30 is aimed at the heart of the burgeoning EV market — and with prices starting comfortably below $40,000, it seems likely to be a very big deal for the brand.

Powertrain Specs and Range

Volvo simplifies the EX30 lineup relative to most current electric vehicles by simply offering a single 64-kilowatt-hour battery pack for its two powertrain options. With the standard, rear-mounted 268-horsepower electric motor, Volvo claims range will be 275 miles; add a motor at the front for a total of 422 hp and range drops to 265 miles — but performance gets exciting. Volvo says the dual-motor EX30 will sprint from 0-60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. With an onboard charger that can handle up to 153 kilowatts, the EX30 can charge from 10% to 80% in “a little over 26.5 minutes,” according to Volvo.

Safety and Tech

The brand hasn’t yet released a full rundown of the safety and technology systems it will offer on the EX30, but it says the SUV will come with “all the safety you’d expect from a Volvo car,” with “a wide array of radars, cameras and ultrasonic sensors.” We do know that standard equipment will include Google Built-In, wireless Apple CarPlay and safety features like front and rear collision mitigation and blind spot monitors. The top-of-the-line Ultra trim level will boast a 360-degree camera system, automated parking and the latest generation of Pilot Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centering steering for hands-free driving.

Availability and Pricing

Volvo says deposit holders will be able to place orders for the 2025 EX30 later in the fall, and deliveries will begin in the first half of 2024. Full pricing (including $1,295 destination) is as follows:

  • Core: $36,245
  • Plus RWD: $40,195
  • Ultra RWD: $41,895
  • Plus AWD: $46,195
  • Ultra AWD: $47,895

Versus the Competition

The 2025 Volvo EX30’s size, range and price are an enticing and competitive combo. The 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV offers an EPA-estimated 247 miles of range for $28,795, while the 2023 Hyundai Kona Electric starts at $34,885 and boasts 258 miles of range — and that’s it for EVs with more than 200 miles of range for less than $40,000. The 2024 Kia Niro EV will offer 253 miles for $40,925, and the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 has a range of 209 miles for $40,290.
