What Is the 2023 Toyota RAV4?

The Toyota RAV4 is a compact two-row SUV with room for five people. Under the hood is a 203-horsepower four-cylinder engine that’s mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive optional. If you like variety, you’re in luck: In addition to the gas RAV4, Toyota makes hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the SUV, both with standard all-wheel drive. The RAV4 Hybrid’s four-cylinder pairs with two electric motors for a total output of 219 hp, while the RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid has a stout 302-hp powertrain and an EPA-estimated electric-only range of 42 miles; beyond that point, the 2.5-liter four-cylinder kicks into action. The RAV4’s competitors include the Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue and Volkswagen Tiguan

The RAV4 Hybrid offers 20.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind its backseat, according to Cars.com’s cargo measurements. You can see how it scored in our Car Seat Check here.

What’s New on the 2023 Toyota RAV4?

Toyota has significantly updated the 2023 RAV4’s infotainment system, with all-new software, over-the-air update capability, and an 8- or 10.5-inch touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is Toyota’s “Hey Toyota” voice command system. The gauge cluster has been revamped, as well, with a 7- or 12.3-inch digital display. The off-road-themed Woodland Edition, which debuted for 2022 on the gas-only RAV4, is now available on the RAV4 Hybrid, as well. It has bronze-colored alloy wheels, a roof rack, an upgraded TRD-tuned suspension and all-terrain tires.

What Features in the 2023 Toyota RAV4 Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • “Hey Toyota” voice command system
  • Satellite radio
  • Three USB ports
  • LED headlights
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning with steering assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Automatic high-beam headlights

Available features include:

  • Panoramic moonroof
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • TRD-tuned suspension
  • Heated steering wheel
  • 10.5-inch touchscreen
  • 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster
  • JBL premium stereo
  • Wireless device charging
  • 360-degree camera system
  • Blind spot warning
  • Rear cross-traffic alert

Should I Buy the 2023 Toyota RAV4?

The Toyota RAV4 is extremely popular because it does so much well, and its three available powertrains make it highly adaptable to all types of SUV shoppers. While the standard 203-hp four-cylinder can drone under hard acceleration, it’s perfectly fine in most circumstances. The RAV4’s TRD-tuned trims will appeal to the outdoorsy crowd, while the RAV4 Prime PHEV is downright quick and has an impressive electric-only driving range of 42 miles. Be wary, though: Scaling up the RAV4’s many trim levels can send this SUV’s price soaring.

Best of Both Worlds

We had a totally electric Mustang Mach E which we traded for this car since the range and infrastructure both were not ideal. The Toyota RAV4 Prime is the best of both worlds since it is a plug-in hybrid and is the car I should have purchased originally. It gets between 44 - 50 miles on totally electric charge (for around home) and about 500 miles on a fill up of the gas tank (hybrid used on the highway). Pricing was NOT ideal as they added a "Market Adjustment" to the price so it was above MSRP.
