
It’s Honda who called its hydrogen-powered car the Clarity, but now Toyota is adopting the principle, if not the name. To make the (former) RAV4 Prime’s position and powertrain technology more clear, Toyota is rechristening its plug-in hybrid SUV as, simply, the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid. Otherwise, the RAV4 PHEV carries into the 2025 model year unchanged.
Powertrain Specs and MPG
The RAV4 PHEV’s powertrain consists of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors, which combine to route 302 horsepower to the continuously variable automatic transmission. Unlike the rest of the RAV4 lineup, the PHEV is only available with all-wheel drive.
While the 2024 PHEV’s EPA-rated combined fuel economy rating of 38 mpg trails the regular AWD RAV4 Hybrid by a single mpg, the former can manage up to 42 miles on battery power alone (official EPA figures are not yet available for the 2025 model but are not expected to change). The PHEV’s powertrain is vastly more powerful than the others, too: The standard RAV4 makes 203 hp and the hybrid a combined 219 hp. Toyota claims the plug-in can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 5.5 seconds.
Availability and Pricing
The 2025 Toyota RAV4 PHEV will arrive at dealers in late 2024. The SE trim level starts at $45,260, and the XSE starts at $49,130 (all prices include $1,395 destination fee). Toyota hasn’t announced pricing yet for the 2025 model-year RAV4 Hybrid, but based on the 2024 model’s pricing, the plug-in should run around $12,000 higher than its plugless sibling.

Safety Features and Trim Levels
Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ is standard on every 2025 RAV4 PHEV. The suite includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert, lane-centering steering and automatic high beams. Blind spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert are also standard.
Additionally, the SE features 18-inch wheels, a power liftgate, LED head- and taillights, remote start, and keyless start and entry. Inside, it has cloth seating, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control with rear-seat vents, six speakers, and an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and satellite radio.
Stepping up to the XSE nets buyers two-tone paint with a black roof, 19-inch wheels and a moonroof. The XSE’s cabin is upgraded with synthetic leather seats, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, additional soft-touch material, a 10.5-inch infotainment touchscreen and wireless phone charging.
