What Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner?

The Toyota 4Runner is one of a few remaining SUVs that use body-on-frame construction. This trucklike setup makes it great for scaling boulders and traversing muddy ravines, but less adept when it comes to refinement on paved roads.

A 270-horsepower, 4.0-liter V-6 engine is standard and pairs with a five-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard on most trims, with part- and full-time four-wheel drive available. Equipped with its optional third row, the 4Runner can seat up to seven. Serious off-roaders might cross-shop the 4Runner with the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler. Other competitors include the Ford Explorer, Honda Passport and Pilot, Hyundai Santa Fe and Subaru Ascent.

What’s New on the 2024 Toyota 4Runner?

Outside a couple changes to the color palette, the 4Runner sees no notable revisions for the 2024 model year. An all-new, redesigned 4Runner is set to go on sale as a 2025 model. The new 4Runner is based on the platform of the redesigned-for-2024 Tacoma pickup truck and will be powered by a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine in regular and hybrid forms.

What Features in the 2024 Toyota 4Runner Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity
  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • Power-sliding liftgate window
  • Leather-trimmed steering wheel
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning
  • Blind spot warning
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Adaptive cruise control

Available features include:

  • Locking rear differential
  • Selectable terrain management system
  • Power moonroof
  • Leather-trimmed seats
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Dual-zone automatic air conditioning
  • Navigation
  • JBL premium stereo
  • Locking rear differential
  • Selectable terrain management system

Should I Buy the 2024 Toyota 4Runner?

The aged Toyota 4Runner is unashamedly rugged, trading posh driving manners for go-anywhere capability. It’s not exactly terrible during, say, a city-centric daily commute, but there’s no denying it trails just about every other mid-size SUV when it comes to ride quality and steering feel. That being said, there’s a charm to the 4Runner’s no-nonsense approach, even if its next-generation replacement feels long overdue.

4Runner disappointment

After purchasing a Lexus with the basic accessories, I was disappointed in the way Toyota had treated the 4Runner TRD Off-Road premium. Premium definition to this model is push button start heated seats Apple Car play compatibility meaning you have to plug your phone in. Toyota has an app to connect to your car, but it doesn’t give you the option to start it . What kind of app does this feature? You do get the off road package but the suspension was not really impressive. No key fob auto starts, most vehicles in nowadays have this feature but not this premium vehicle. The screen display is very small. Let’s just say it is functional. That’s it. This was a big disappointment! The dealers’ excuse was that the new 4 Runner was coming out and didn’t want to make it to where this model would be made better.
