Expert 2025 Volvo XC40 review

Our expert's take

volvo xc40 recharge 2025 exterior oem 01 jpg

Volvo is sticking to its aggressive plans for electrification, intending to sell nothing but electric vehicles by 2030. While the all-electric XC40 Recharge has been renamed the EX40 to fit into Volvo’s EV nomenclature and the gas-powered XC40 is unchanged for the new model year, the latter is far from rotting on the vine and remains a charming, well-rounded small SUV. And for 2025, the XC40’s base price increases just $650, to $41,945 (all prices include $1,295 destination fee).

Availability and Pricing

The 2025 Volvo XC40 is on sale now. Full line pricing is as follows:

  • Core: $41,945
  • Plus: $46,795
  • Ultra: $50,595

Powertrain Specs and MPG

Even the gas-powered XC40 is electrified, with its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine assisted by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Generating 247 horsepower and 258 pounds-feet of torque, the powertrain is teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The combo is good for an EPA-rated 23/30/26 mpg city/highway/combined.

Safety Features and Trim Levels

Standard safety systems for the 2025 XC40 include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and steering assist, blind spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, road-sign recognition, rain-sensing windshield wipers and rear parking sensors. Additional features on the entry-level Core trim include 18-inch wheels, a power liftgate, and keyless entry and start. Inside are cloth upholstery, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat and dual-zone automatic climate control. In-car tech includes wireless phone charging, eight speakers, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay.

The mid-level Pure adds a 360-degree camera system, front and side parking sensors, a panoramic moonroof and 19-inch wheels. Its cabin is upgraded with leather upholstery and fancier trim, a power-adjustable passenger seat and a crystal shifter knob.

At the top of the lineup, the Ultra features adaptive cruise control, lane-centering steering, 20-inch wheels, upgraded headlights and a 13-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.
