volkswagen id4 awd pro s 2021 01 dynamic exterior front angle red suv scaled jpg

When the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 launched, we called its range “modest” for a new electric SUV; an update for 2022 adds some miles and makes it more competitive against other small electric SUVs. The automaker today announced that the 2022 VW ID.4 base rear-wheel-drive Pro trim has an EPA-estimated 280 miles of range, an increase of 20 miles from the 2021 model.

Other versions also see range boosts for 2022, but they are smaller increases. The all-wheel-drive Pro now gets 251 miles of range, up from 249 miles for 2021. The RWD Pro S is good for 268 miles, up from 250 miles. Last, the AWD Pro S is now rated at 245 miles of range, up from 240 miles.

The AWD ID.4’s range still falls short of the AWD Ford Mustang Mach-E, which maxes out at 305 miles. The Tesla Model Y, offered exclusively with AWD, outperforms both SUVs with an EPA-estimated range of 303 to 330 miles, depending on the variation you choose.

The added range also comes at a price; each model sees a $765 increase over outgoing models. The base 2022 ID.4 Pro starts at $41,955 for RWD and $45,635 for AWD. Pro S models, which add features like a panoramic moonroof and larger touchscreen, start at $46,455 for RWD and $50,135 for AWD.  All prices include destination but exclude the federal tax credit of $7,500 or any available state credits. Despite the price increase, the ID.4 is still more affordable than the Mach-E or Model Y.

Reservations are open for the 2022 ID.4, though the automaker has yet to provide a delivery timeline for the model. Volkswagen previously said model-year 2022 deliveries should start around the end of February or the beginning of March for current reservation holders.

Prepare for Disappointment

Bought a 2022 ID4 new and put 10,000 miles on it over the course of a year. While I enjoyed the efficiency of the vehicle for cheap transportation costs the car just did not deliver in terms of quality for the price and driving dynamics. The biggest reason why I grew from love to hate for my ID4 was how you control everything, I am a tech person, but the touchscreen, software and Haptic Touch buttons are TERRIBLE! want to roll down your window? oops you accidentally feathered the “rear” haptic and now you’re controlling your rear windows, want to turn on the heated steering wheel? Prepare to pull over or risk crashing and navigate to the climate menu via the touchscreen while try and tap the tiny icon to activate your desired function but you end up giving up because the touch screen doesn’t read your callused hands accurately. I wanted to love this car, but in the end my fiancé and I agreed we would rather burn gas and have money in the bank than grow increasingly frustrated with this car because it was rushed to market with huge oversights for a $50,000 vehicle. My 2010 Acura had features this car lacked that we desperately missed. Oh yeah, and prepare for VW to tell you constantly that a software update is around the corner that never comes…. And then fails when you try.

ID4 crushed the Rocky Mountains

This car has delivered beyond our expectations. Recently took it on a 180 mile trip into the Rocky Mountains. We arrived with over 150 miles in reserve. It’s quiet and smooth. Highly recommend!
