Expert 2019 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack review

What Is the 2019 Volkswagen Golf?

The Golf lineup encompasses a wide range of models, including the four-door Golf hatchback, performance GTI and R hatchbacks, and the SportWagen and Alltrack wagons. The SportWagen is available with front- or all-wheel drive, while the Golf R and Alltrack have standard AWD. Other models have FWD. Competitors include the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback, Kia Soul and Mini Countryman.

What’s New on the 2019 Volkswagen Golf?

On the Golf S and SE, as well as the front-drive SportWagen, the engine is now a 147-horsepower, turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder instead of a 1.8-liter engine. Horsepower on GTI models increases 8 hp to 228 hp, and the GTI Rabbit Edition comes with gloss-black 18-inch wheels, adaptive LED headlights, and unique exterior and interior trim; the GTI also gets a limited-slip differential and brakes from the Golf R. The Golf R, meanwhile, comes in a single trim level with the Dynamic Chassis Control adaptive suspension and navigation. The base S trim levels of the Alltrack and regular Golf add forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, a blind spot warning system and rear cross-traffic alert.

What Features in the 2019 Volkswagen Golf Are Most Important?

All models offer a rare combination of practicality and fun-to-drive sportiness that makes the Golf stand out from the crowd. Forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking is available on all models and standard on many. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity is standard.

Should I Buy the 2019 Volkswagen Golf?

Volkswagen stumbled badly with its diesel emissions scandal, but it’s showing a renewed focus on catering to American tastes while retaining some of its German heritage. That said, the Golf line lacks the styling appeal of some competitors — and a roster of hatchbacks and wagons seems out of tune with today’s market. However, driving a Golf and experiencing its refinement and versatility might be enough to sway some SUV-minded shoppers.

We bought a used 2019 a month ago.

We bought a used 2019 a month ago. I wasn't aware of these. As I researched a replacement for my wife's GMC Terrain, I learned about all of the bad CVT transmissions and oil burning engines in that class. Happened on a used Alltrack for sale at a dealer and as I researched the dsg transmission and looked up reviews - I was pretty excited by what I read. We have taken in on one 6-hour trip through the mountains and several 3-hour family visits. I love driving it. Probably my favorite car I have driven other than my old 2000 Volvo S70. It seems to be very well built. It is insanely quiet on the road and it has great acceleration. We travel with two kids and two dogs and it zips right up mountain passes, rarely cracking 3k rpm. I wish we had about 2 more inches in the trunk for our kennel, but it is a large space. I am anxious to try the AWD in some Montana snow this winter. Sadly its my wife's driver, but I get to drive it on trip!

Love this Car!

Love my Alltrack! While snug, it is a compact, its well oriented, and fun to drive. I have the sky roof option, and love it. Typical German engineering, simple on the frills, but great performance. Plenty of room in the trunk area for most anything. Visually a great looking car, inside and out. Outstanding gas mileage, and it'll even teach you to get the most out of it mileage wise.
