Expert 2018 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack review

our expert's take
Our expert's take
By Cars.com editors
Full article
our expert's take

Volkswagen has announced the U.S. versions for the refreshed 2018 Golf lineup already unveiled for Europe. The new line includes GTI and R performance models and the SportWagen and Alltrack wagons.

Exterior
It’s an understatement to say that the exterior changes are subtle. The bumpers are slightly reshaped and are a little crisper. There now is a dash of chrome in the grill, some new wheel designs and some new paint colors. LED taillights and daytime running lights now are standard on all models; full LED headlights replace the bi-xenon units as the upgrade option.

Interior
More is changed inside where, in additional to some materials upgrades, there is a revised dashboard to accommodate a new media system with bigger screens — a 6.5-inch display on base models and an 8-inch touchscreen for SE and above models.

The top-of the line Golf R performance version is the only U.S. Golf that will have the new configurable digital instrument cluster available on more models in Europe. LED adaptive headlights also will be standard on the 2018 R model.

Under the Hood
Powertrains carry over from 2017, but the GTI gets a 10-horsepower boost to 220 hp. The GTI also gets upgraded brakes and an electronic limited-slip differential standard.

Safety
Driver safety and assistance technology, including a front collision system with automatic braking that now includes pedestrian detection, will be more widely available on most models with the second-level SE trim and above.

Awesome wagon and a great value

This is one of the best vehicles I’ve owned. As a big fan of wagons, there are very few options in America, and this is certainly the best value out there. There were only two trim levels available, which means the base S model is really well equipped (heated seats, CarPlay, etc.). It’s a shame VW discontinued this model!

Cant get enough..

This is one heck of a car. I loved my 17 SEL so much, I had to have a 18. There are SO many positives about this vehicle, I don't even know where to begin. Styling with the LED exterior lighing, 18" Canyon Alloys, Front and Rear park assist, Marrakesch brown interior. The 1.8L Turbo isn't the quickest, but has enough punch for me. The Alltrack is a rarity on the road, which makes you feel more special. You get lost in a sea of boring Subarus; if only they knew how much fun and unique this car actually is.. The seats in the SEL are supportive and comfortable. The interior controls are extremely intuitive. Absolutely love the panoramic sunroof that's always open; even on chilly 50 degree mornings / evenings. The heated seats and dual climate control help with that. Although the rear seat leg room is nothing to write home about, I never hear any complaints. Cargo space is superb, especially with the rear seats folded down. When those black friday deals get you, you can haul away a 65" tv with no issues what so ever. AWD system performs very well and gives you confidence when driving offroad / wet and snowy conditions. One thing I wish I had would be the blind spot monitoring. The early 2018 models did not have that option, but VW later tacked that on to the build sheet. You wont be disappointed with this car. I drive my Alltrack proud, daily... The compliments from onlookers facial expressions never get old, either.
