Toytota’s Tacoma mid-size pickup truck got a refresh for 2020. The third generation of the truck gets more standard safety features, updated grille and headlight designs, as well as an upgraded multimedia system and new LED bed lighting.

The biggest changes for 2020 have to do with safety features. The Tacoma received a larger suite of standard safety features, the Toyota Safety Sense P package that bundles forward collision warning with autonomous braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert and automatic high beams. 

Another welcome change relates to the truck’s multimedia system. The base SR trim gets a larger 7-inch touchscreen system; other trims use a larger 8-inch touchscreen. Both versions finally get Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa capability. 

A lot carries over into model-year 2020. The Tacoma continues to be offered with two engines: the standard 2.7-liter inline-four-cylinder and optional 3.5-liter V-6 both mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The Tacoma also continues to offer two cab configurations — Access and double — and bed lengths of 6 feet for Access Cabs and 5 feet for double cabs. 

The 2020 Tacoma’s pricing looks familiar, too, as increases are minimal compared with model-year 2019. The truck is available in SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off Road, Limited and TRD Pro trims, and the majority of trims see their prices rise by $200 (destination fees remain unchanged at $1,120). The 2020 Tacoma is on sale now. For model-year 2021, a new Trail Special Edition that emphasizes outdoor equipment and rugged styling joins the Tacoma lineup. Also new for 2021 is a new Nightshade Special Edition of the truck, which boasts a black-themed interior and exterior styling upgrades. Toyota says it will build 5,000 versions of the Tacoma Nightshade; no word yet on pricing, but both special editions are expected to go on sale in the summer.

I love my Tacoma.

I love my Tacoma. I've always been a GMC person, but wasn't happy with their smaller pickup options. I made the jump to a Tacoma and I've already driven it across the country. I was very comfortable, extremely happy with performance.

Perfect Truck.

Perfect truck. Best all around pick-up truck. Good off road, great gas mileage. Cheap insurance, awesome looking, good towing, decent load capacity, seats 4 comfortably. Rides great.
