What Is the 2023 Subaru Outback?

With seating for five and an exceptionally roomy cargo area, the 2023 Subaru Outback is a highly versatile mid-size wagon that’s a compelling choice for shoppers who want SUV levels of space in something that’s a bit more carlike and manageable to drive. The base powertrain is a 182-horsepower four-cylinder paired to a continuously variable automatic transmission; a 260-hp turbo-four is optional, and it delivers notably stronger passing power. All-wheel drive is standard with either engine.

What’s New on the 2023 Subaru Outback?

The 2023 Outback receives a modest exterior makeover that consists of a redesigned front bumper, larger grille and slimmer headlights. The Onyx Edition is now available with the naturally aspirated base engine, and Subaru has made improvements to the camera systems related to the Outback’s active-safety features.

What Features in the 2023 Subaru Outback Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • Dual 7-inch touchscreens
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Automatic climate control
  • Keyless entry
  • Satellite radio
  • Two USB ports
  • Lane departure warning
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Rear-seat reminder
  • Automatic high-beam headlights

Available features include:

  • 11.6-inch touchscreen
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Power-adjustable driver’s seat
  • Leather seating surfaces
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Remote start
  • Blind spot warning
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Heated front seats
  • Heated rear seats
  • 12-speaker Harman Kardon stereo
  • Hands-free power liftgate

Should I Buy the 2023 Subaru Outback?

Roomy and relaxing to drive, the Outback is an excellent alternative to both a mid-size sedan and a compact SUV. Standard AWD is a key selling point, though the Outback should also be credited for its strong roster of safety and tech features. The base engine is good on gas, though it can drone under hard acceleration. The turbo four-cylinder in upper trims delivers better performance, and it nudges maximum towing capacity to 3,500 pounds. With its extra ground clearance, underbody skid plates and off-road tires, the Wilderness trim gives the Outback even more outdoorsy appeal and all-terrain capability.

My 2023 XT Limited is the 3rd Outback I've owned.

My 2023 XT Limited is the 3rd Outback I've owned. The first two were 2017/2019 Touring trim with a 2.5 non-turbo 4 cyl. We upgraded so we could tow but soon found out that the 2023 XT has insufficient transmission cooling for our little trailer (2,000lbs dry, car is rated for 3500 lbs). When asked, Subaru says the car wasn't really built to tow. Add to that the psychotic turbo lag/jump, esp. in town and the poor fuel economy & I wished I had never bought this car. Subaru dealer has no answers.

Air Does Not Work

Purchased new in January 2023. Has been in for the same repairs 3 times for air not working. Each time they replace the cockpit control unit and it still doesn't work. The only time is does work is when it is above 87 degrees and has been sitting outside all day in the sun.
