Expert 2025 Subaru Crosstrek review

subaru crosstrek wilderness 2024 exterior oem 26 jpg

Subaru’s Crosstrek received a significant overhaul for the 2024 model year, with updated styling on the outside and upgraded convenience and safety tech inside — thus, the automaker’s popular small SUV remains mostly the same for 2025. The only major change is that the available 2.5-liter flat-four-cylinder engine and dual-function X-Mode with hill descent control, previously standard on the Sport, Wilderness and Limited trim levels, move down one rung on the ladder and are now also standard on the Premium trim.

Powertrain Specs and MPG

That leaves the Base trim level as the lone Crosstrek with the 152-horsepower, 2.0-liter flat-four, which puts out 145 pounds-feet of torque and gets an EPA-rated 27/34/29 mpg city/highway/combined. The larger 2.5-liter engine powers the rest of the lineup with 182 hp and 178 pounds-feet. A continuously variable automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard across the line. With its higher stance and all-terrain tires, the Crosstrek Wilderness earns an EPA-rated 25/29/27 mpg, while the rest of the family returns 27/33/29 mpg.

Availability and Pricing

The 2025 Subaru Crosstrek will go on sale later in 2024. Full pricing (including $1,420 destination fee) is as follows:

  • Base: $27,115
  • Premium: $28,365
  • Sport: $30,915
  • Limited: $32,815
  • Wilderness: $33,915

Safety Features and Trim Levels

Subaru’s EyeSight safety suite is standard on the 2025 Crosstrek and includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure prevention, lane-centering steering and adaptive cruise control. The base Crosstrek rides on dark-gray 17-inch wheels and features adaptive headlights that turn with the steering wheel, automatic high beams, four speakers and dual-zone automatic climate control. The base infotainment system consists of dual 7-inch touchscreens, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

In addition to the larger, more powerful engine, the Premium gets keyless entry and start, upgraded cloth upholstery, six speakers and access to more options. It also integrates the split touchscreens into a single 11.6-inch unit with wireless smartphone mirroring and Wi-Fi.

The Crosstrek Sport adds 18-inch wheels and features black and yellow exterior trim, as well as yellow accent stitching inside. It also gains improved sound insulation, heated front seats and side mirrors, windshield-wiper de-icers and wireless phone charging.

For venturing off the beaten path, the Wilderness gets a raised suspension with 9.3 inches of ground clearance (versus 8.7 for the rest of the Crosstrek family) and all-terrain tires mounted on matte-black 17-inch wheels. It can also tow 3,500 pounds, an improvement of 2,000 pounds over other trim levels. Copper-colored exterior trim and water-repellent synthetic leather help it stand out, and its EyeSight safety suite is bolstered with blind spot intervention, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, and emergency steering assist.

As the most luxurious Crosstrek, the Limited also features the Wilderness’s additional safety equipment but forgoes the capability upgrades in favor of power-adjustable front seats and perforated leather upholstery with orange stitching.

Very happy with my new Crosstrek.

Very happy with my new Crosstrek. Enjoyable to drive. Handles well. The 2.5L, 182 HP motor has plenty of power. And the ride is smooth and comfortable. What’s not too like?
