our expert's take

What Is the 2023 Ram 1500?

The Ram 1500 is a full-size pickup truck with seating for up to six and a wide lineup of trim levels. It’s targeted at rivals like the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ford F-150 and Toyota Tundra. The Ram separates itself from the competition with an interior in higher trims that wouldn’t look out of place in a luxury vehicle.

A mild-hybrid V-6 drivetrain is standard, but a turbo-diesel V-6 and a pair of V-8 engines — including a 702-hp, supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 in the TRX trim — are also offered. All engines come with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and rear- and four-wheel-drive models are available.

(Note: Ram also continues to sell the value-oriented Ram 1500 Classic, a continuation of the brand’s previous-generation light-duty pickup whose basic design dates back to 2009. It’s covered separately in the Cars.com Research section.)

What’s New on the 2023 Ram 1500?

A 12-inch digital gauge cluster is newly available, and an LED hitch lamp is newly standard. An extra-luxurious Limited Elite Edition gets upscale features including premium leather upholstery, a jeweled rotary shifter and a suede headliner. There are also a couple of new uniquely trimmed special-edition trucks, including the TRX Havoc Edition. The 2023 model year will be the last for the Ram’s available turbo-diesel V-6 engine.

What Features in the 2023 Ram 1500 Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • Remote keyless entry
  • Air conditioning
  • Cruise control
  • 5-inch touchscreen multimedia system
  • Bluetooth connectivity

Available features include:

  • Four-corner air suspension
  • Dual-panel moonroof
  • 8.4- or 12-inch touchscreen multimedia system
  • Wireless device charging
  • 360-degree camera system
  • Forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking
  • Blind spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert
  • Lane departure warning
  • Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability
  • Automatic high-beam headlights

Should I Buy the 2023 Ram 1500?

The Ram 1500 proves that a modern full-size pickup can be anything from a no-frills workhorse to a luxury-laden palace — or even a performance beast, as is the 702-hp TRX. The truck’s high-end trim levels are pricey, though the same is true of this truck’s key rivals. Less expensive trims still deliver a great blend of utility, power, convenience and user-friendly controls.

I bought a 2020 Ram 1500 ecodiesel Limited.

I bought a 2020 Ram 1500 ecodiesel Limited. The truck drove great and had the best interior and exterior. I drove a lot of easy highway miles and it was a good truck for the most part until an in dash electrical issue started the truck on fire. I had to make an emergency stop and escaped before the truck was fully engulfed in flames. Ram Care conducted an investigation but declined any responsibility because the fire was so severe they could not determine the exact cause. I cannot in good conscience recommend this truck for obvious safety reasons and the fact the Ram refused to stand behind it!

2020 Ram 1500 Limited

Bought a 2020 Ram 1500 Limited new and owned for 4 years. The starter went out twice under !00,000 miles so replaced 2 starters, had spark plug miss fire that had to get fixed, had exhaust manifold crack making the clicking sound upon startup, gas mileage got bad around 80,000 miles. I loved my truck but was stuck 2 where truck wouldn't start because the starter Ram uses is too small and not enough power for the start/stop and this size of engine. Also, heated seats are not hot at all. Coming from a F150 where the heated seats were incredibly hot which felt great, Ram not so much.
