Automakers like Porsche are doing their best to reassure us that electrification will not mean the death of fun vehicles. Porsche’s latest argument: the 729-horsepower 2024 Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid. (Take a moment to laugh at the delightful absurdity.) The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat made headlines in 2014 with 707 hp, and now we have a plug-in hybrid SUV capable of electric-only propulsion surpassing that output.

The Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid, available in both the traditional SUV and coupeified body styles, starts with a revised version of Porsche’s twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 that makes 591 hp. With an electric motor contributing up to 174 hp, peak system output is not only 729 hp, but also 700 pounds-feet of torque. With power going through an eight-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels, Porsche says this will be good for a 0-60 mph sprint of just 3.5 seconds. Top speed is said to be 183 mph.

Quiet Time

But this is a PHEV, so battery specs matter, too. The new pack is larger — 25.9 kilowatt-hours versus the 2023 model’s 17.9 kWh — and is paired with an onboard charger. The 11-kilowatt onboard charger is roughly three times more powerful than the previous model’s standard piece and lowers charging time to less than 2.5 hours. Porsche hasn’t shared the anticipated electric-only range for the 2024 model yet, but it should exceed the 15 miles the EPA estimated for the 2023 version.

Porsche’s trick new adaptive air suspension, optional on the rest of the Cayenne lineup barring the Turbo GT, is standard on the Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid. With dual chambers in the air spring allowing for separate adjustability of upward and downward wheel motions, the setup is said to offer greater differentiation between Comfort and Sport Plus drive modes. Additional standard equipment includes LED headlights, a digital instrument cluster and wireless phone charging.

Larger air intakes in the front fascia and a monochromatic exterior distinguish the Turbo E-Hybrid (other Cayennes have black lower-body and rear-fascia trim). Brushed-aluminum tailpipes and red brake calipers are also unique to the PHEV variant. Inside, there is standard aluminum trim and a synthetic suede headliner.

Availability and Pricing

Porsche is accepting orders for the 2024 Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid now, with deliveries expected to begin in the second quarter of 2024. The traditional SUV body style starts at $148,550, and the coupe starts at $153,050 (prices include $1,650 destination fee).
