our expert's take

What Is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class?

The two-seat Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, a retractable-hardtop convertible, is constructed mostly of aluminum and is offered with a choice of V-6 or V-8 power. The base SL450 gets a 362-horsepower, twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine, while the SL550 uses a 449-hp, twin-turbo 4.7-liter V-8; a handcrafted 577-hp, twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 powers the AMG SL63. All models have rear-wheel drive. The SL competes with the BMW 6 Series.

What’s New on the 2019 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class?

The AMG SL65 version, which was powered by a V-12 engine, has been discontinued. The returning models receive no significant changes.

What Features in the 2019 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Are Most Important?

The SL comes with features not found on many other cars. The power-retractable roof can be raised or lowered while the car is moving at up to 25 mph. When the top is up, an available panoramic glass section can automatically change from dark to transparent. An available active suspension adjusts to reduce body roll in corners and lowers automatically at high speeds.

Should I Buy the 2019 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class?

The SL roadster has been coddling Mercedes customers for more than 60 years, and though it doesn’t rank in the same performance league as the Porsche 911, the SL550 and AMG SL63 are hardly boulevard cruisers. They offer elegant surroundings and enough verve to keep most drivers entertained.

I love my car! The navigation is poor and I always use my iphone. That is my major complaint. I love how it hugs me on curves. Trunk space is very adequate and ro0omy for a sports car!

Great car, but short on some deliverables

I like this car. My first sl500, ten years ago, was better in my opinion. The 2019 has beautiful inside styling and very comfortable. Technology does not match my Audi Q8 SUV. Very advanced, SL450 not so much. Not bad, but not up to snuff compared to others. Some features hard to use. Mercedes has never produced a very workable Navigation system. it's old and awkward and voice control is a total pain. Overall, I'm a fan of the car, but it is overpriced for what you get in my opinion. I liked my 2017 CLS 500 much better and now, with the 2019 style changes making it look like a 30k C Class, won' buy that one anymore. I've been driving Mercedes exclusively for my regular care since the 90's. Overall very happy. Seems like now though the prices are up but the technology and even style is not keeping pace.
