our expert's take

What Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class?

The Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class launched the concept of the “four-door coupe” when it first debuted, and the five-seat mid-size luxury car was last redesigned for 2019. Power comes from a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine that makes 362 horsepower in the rear- or all-wheel-drive CLS 450 and 429 hp in the performance-oriented all-wheel-drive AMG CLS 53. Both cars have a nine-speed automatic transmission. Competitors include the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe and Audi A7

What’s New on the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class?

The hood now has power domes, but there are no other significant changes.

What Features in the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class Are Most Important?

Standard features include leather upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, a power trunk lid, a 12.3-inch multimedia screen, navigation and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. Standard active safety features include automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning and a driver-drowsiness monitor.

Should I Buy the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class?

The calling card of the CLS-Class has long been stylish design, and that’s no different in the current version. It’s also comfortable, quiet and luxurious, as you’d expect from a Mercedes-Benz. The backseat, however, is small, and the automatic transmission sometimes upshifts too soon.

Rare car, rare quality, rare performance. A+ AMG

So, we had a new E450 on order and the supply chain issues delayed the process for months...we got frustrated and started looking at options. We found our garage kept, under warranty, low miles CLS53 and it shares garage space with our '22 Tesla MSLR. It is really interesting to compare the cars in daily driving. The CLS is far more luxurious...massaging heated seats with active bolsters just give you a hug in tight turns. Not quite as much of a rocket ship as the Tesla, but make no mistake...it is a friggin' rocket ship. I was concerned about an AMG six cylinder, but the turbos are spectacular with amazing performance...all while getting fairly reasonable mileage. It is a little funny, we didn't want another showy SL, and we wanted the extra seats to carry grandkids, so the CLS is perfect. We like the idea of being a little understated, and the CLS is perfect. Quite possible that non-car people don't even notice it, but car people do...and the low key badging and clean lines make for a great sleeper. Very quiet, very well made. If I have a quibble it is that the learning curve for all the systems is a little steep. Low production volume means there isn't a huge community to support these cars and it means not a whole lot of YouTubes on how things work...but figuring it out is fun. Stunning car and great addition to the AMG community.
