There’s a joke often credited to either Kenny Powers or comedian Daniel Tosh: They say money can’t buy happiness, but have you ever seen a sad person on a jet ski? The same could be said for the Mazda MX-5 Miata, an elemental roadster that is, like a jet ski, designed purely for enjoyment. For 2025, happiness starts at $30,515.

Mazda fine-tuned the Miata last year, tweaking the steering, adding a newly available limited-slip differential and upgrading the infotainment system. Most of the Miata line is unchanged for 2025, although a 35th Anniversary edition will wear exclusive Artisan Red paint and a tan Nappa leather interior. Mazda will reveal more information about this special edition on Jan. 24, 2025, following the MX-5 Cup series race held during the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
Powertrain Specs and MPG
Available as either a soft-top roadster or with a folding “retractable fastback” hardtop on the MX-5 Miata RF, the lightweight, rear-wheel-drive Miata doesn’t need a lot of power to generate big smiles. Its 2.0-liter four-cylinder generates just 181 horsepower and 151 pounds-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission comes standard, with a six-speed automatic transmission available on the soft-top Grand Touring for $920 and $970 on the RF.
While official EPA figures haven’t been released yet, Mazda claims the 2025 MX-5 Miata gets the same fuel economy as the 2024 model, and with no changes between model years, they’re probably right. It achieves 26/34/29 mpg city/highway/combined with a manual transmission and 26/35/29 mpg with an automatic transmission.
Availability and Pricing
The 2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata is on sale now. Base pricing for the full line, including the standard $1,185 destination fee, is as follows:
Soft Top
- Sport: $30,515
- Club: $34,015
- Grand Touring: $35,815
RF
- Club: $41,835
- Grand Touring: $38,535
(Alaskan customers have a different, slightly higher destination fee of $1,230.)
Trim Levels
The entry-level Sport trim is only available with a black soft top. It rides on 16-inch wheels and features LED exterior lighting, keyless entry, cloth upholstery, six speakers and an 8.8-inch infotainment screen that can be controlled either with a physical knob or via touch. The MX-5 Miata features Amazon Alexa Built-In as well as Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
The mid-level Club trim is even more performance-focused, adding Bilstein shock absorbers, a front shock-tower brace and a limited-slip differential. The Club also gets an induction-sound enhancer that pipes engine noise into the cabin for a sportier sound, along with an additional stability control mode with a higher intervention threshold for track use. A black front air dam and rear spoiler distinguish the Club, as do black 17-inch wheels and a black top. Inside, the Club gets synthetic leather dash and door trim and heated cloth seats with suede inserts. The infotainment system is upgraded with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite radio and a Bose nine-speaker audio system with head-restraint speakers.
Mazda’s Brembo BBS Recaro Package is standard on folding-hardtop Clubs and available on the soft-top Club for $4,900. As its name implies, it includes Brembo brakes, BBS wheels and Recaro sport seats. The Brembo brakes are only on the front wheels, although the front and rear calipers get painted red. The BBS wheels measure 17 inches and wear a dark-gray finish, and the Recaro seats are heated. The package also includes black sill extensions and a rear-bumper skirt.
At the top of the Miata lineup is the Grand Touring. The six-speed automatic is only available on the Grand Touring, but opting for it forgoes the Club’s standard performance features, which are also standard on the manual-transmission Grand Touring. (The Brembo BBS Recaro pack is not available on the GT.) All Grand Tourings feature adaptive headlights with automatic high beams, road-sign recognition, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and two-tone black and machined 17-inch wheels. Black leather upholstery is standard, and tan is available for $300. The Grand Touring’s cabin also gets upgraded with silver trim instead of black, navigation and automatic climate control. Models with the automatic transmission also get adaptive cruise control, and the Grand Touring RF includes a body-color roof.
Safety Features
As basic as the MX-5 is, every 2025 Miata is fitted with Mazda’s i-Activsense advanced safety suite. Standard features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert and lane departure warning.
