New for the 2024 model year, the Mazda CX-90 is a decisive step upmarket for the independent Japanese brand. It’s built on a new rear-drive architecture (although every CX-90 sold in the U.S. is all-wheel drive), powered by a freshly developed turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine and drives more like the similarly sized offerings from traditional German luxury brands than any mainstream competitor. For 2025, Mazda is shuffling the CX-90 lineup, adding new Premium Sport trim levels with two of the available powertrains.

Offered with the base Turbo powertrain and the plug-in hybrid, the Premium Sport trim levels ride on black 21-inch wheels and feature black finishes on the grille, badging, lower front and rear bumpers, side mirrors, door trim and roof rails. Also new for 2025, PHEV trims get a standard 12.3-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging and touchscreen functionality when using smartphone mirroring. Front and rear parking sensors are now standard on the PHEV, as well.

Powertrain Specs and MPG

Mazda offers the CX-90 with a turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six in two different states of tune — both of which include mild-hybrid assistance — or as a PHEV. All use an eight-speed automatic transmission and feature standard AWD. In Turbo variants, the 3.3-liter generates 280 horsepower and 332 pounds-feet of torque; according to Mazda, the Turbo should return the same EPA-rated 24/28/25 mpg city/highway/combined as the 2024 model (official 2025 ratings are not yet available).

Turbo S trims get a 3.3-liter good for 340 hp and 369 pounds-feet on premium fuel; horsepower drops to 319 with regular gas. Other than the extra pinch at the pump — and the higher purchase price — there’s little trade-off for the increased output. Turbo S versions are rated at 23/28/25 mpg.

The CX-90 PHEV gets a 2.5-liter four-cylinder augmented with an electric motor that bumps system output to 323 hp and 369 pounds-feet. A 17.8-kilowatt-hour battery provides up to 26 miles of electric range, and in hybrid mode, the plug-in returns the same 25 mpg combined as the Turbo, per Mazda.

Availability and Pricing

The 2025 Mazda CX-90 will go on sale later this summer. Full line pricing, including $1,455 destination, is as follows:

Safety Features and Trim Levels

Standard safety features on the 2025 CX-90 include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure steering assist, a driver attention monitor, vehicle exit warning and a rear-seat reminder.

The base Turbo Select trim rides on 19-inch wheels and features LED exterior lighting, a power liftgate and a black grille. The entry-level CX-90 seats eight and comes with keyless entry and starting, synthetic leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, tri-zone automatic climate control, a 10.25-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, two USB ports in each the front and middle rows, and eight speakers.

On trim levels that are available with both the base Turbo and PHEV powertrains, equipment levels are largely identical regardless of which engine buyers choose. The Preferred trim comes standard with a second-row bench seat, but captain’s chairs are available. It includes a power moonroof, leather seating, heated front seats, a power-adjustable front-passenger seat and second-row window shades. The Preferred also features a larger 12.3-inch infotainment screen and two USB-C inputs added to the third row.

In addition to its visual tweaks, the new-for-2025 Premium Sport gets additional safety features, including blind spot intervention, emergency steering assist and a head-up display. It also adds a panoramic moonroof, hands-free power liftgate, additional driver’s seat adjustability, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, navigation and a Bose 12-speaker audio system.

The Premium Plus further bolsters the safety suite with a 360-degree parking camera, rear emergency braking and forward cross-traffic functionality. Only available with second-row captain’s chairs, the Premium Plus rides on 21-inch wheels and features a choice of black or white Nappa leather, as well as ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated second-row seats and a windshield wiper de-icer.

Both CX-90 Turbo S trims include all of the features of the lesser powertrains’ Premium Plus trim level, as well as a body-color spoiler and wheel-well trim and adaptive headlights. The Turbo S Premium Plus is only offered with two-seat second and third rows. All rows are upholstered in quilted tan or white Nappa leather, and both the first- and second-row seats are heated and ventilated.

Great car i love my cx-90, there is plenty of room for my kids with that 3'd row of seats. I love the features driving this car makes me feel like i am in a space ship, and with the adaptive cruise control and lane assist I hardly even have to drive!

I have been dealing with ongoing issues with my 2025

I have been dealing with ongoing issues with my 2025 Mazda CX-90, and as of next Tuesday, it will have been four weeks at the dealership for repairs. Despite reaching out multiple times, I have received no clear answers from the dealership regarding the status of my car. Adding to the frustration, the loaner vehicle I was provided—another 2025 Mazda CX-90—is experiencing the same issues as my own car. This has made my experience even more disappointing, as it suggests that these problems may be widespread with this model. While the CX-90 has a beautiful design, the persistent mechanical and software issues make it hard to recommend. Based on my experience, I would not advise anyone to purchase this vehicle. The lack of reliability and poor communication from the dealership have made this an incredibly frustrating situation.
