What Is the 2023 Mazda CX-5?

The Mazda CX-5 is a five-seat compact SUV that stands out thanks to its lively driving dynamics, standard all-wheel drive, smooth six-speed automatic transmission and first-class cabin design. The base engine is a 187-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder, though there’s also an available 227-hp, turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder. The turbo engine’s output increases to 256 hp when running on 93-octane premium fuel versus regular gas. If little ones are along for the ride, check how it fared in our Car Seat Check here.

There’s no shortage of competition in the compact SUV class, and rivals include the Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage and Toyota RAV4.

What’s New on the 2023 Mazda CX-5?

The Mazda CX-5 sees no notable updates or changes for 2023.

What Features in the 2023 Mazda CX-5 Are Most Important?

  • Cloth upholstery
  • 10.25-inch multimedia screen
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity
  • Automatic emergency braking

Should I Buy the 2022 Mazda CX-5?

The CX-5 is a delight to drive and features a cabin that wouldn’t look out of place in a compact SUV with a luxury badge. Granted, the infotainment system is controlled via a rotary knob on the center console; a touchscreen interface would be more intuitive. Space in the second row might also prove tight for taller adults during lengthy road trips, and if cargo capacity is a prime concern when you’re shopping SUVs, know that the CX-5 is on the small end of its class: It offers 17.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind its backseat, according to Cars.com’s cargo measurements. Still, its refinement and agility make it a practical SUV that puts a smile on your face when zipping through traffic or down twisty backroads. Note that Mazda also sells the similar CX-50 compact SUV, which is 6 inches longer and a bit lower and wider than the CX-5. It has a towing capacity of up to 3,500 pounds versus the CX-5’s 2,000 pounds.

I own 2023 CX -5 less than 1 year, the key fob's battery

I own 2023 CX -5 less than 1 year, the key fob's battery needs to replace the battery every 3 months and it's not cover by warranty, small interior room, poor trimming, will not recommend it.

Very pleased!

I am delighted with my 2023 CX-5 Signature in the hard-to-find Eternal Blue. I've had it about one year now and it's more than adequate for my driving needs. No, I don't need a rattle-prone pano sunroof. The six-speed non-CVT transmission is just fine. Never need or use(less) the paddle shifters. Performance with regular fuel is just fine. As an "early senior", I don't need huge cargo or passenger space. Only complaints are the Apple CarPlay isn't wireless; and miss the power tilt/telescope steering wheel and power memory exit seat that I had on my unbeloved '20 Lexus NX (which I was glad to get rid of!). All told, I'm a Mazda believer and buh-bye Lexus!
