Expert 2025 GMC Canyon review

gmc canyon 2025 exterior oem 01 jpg

Millenia from now, if the fossil record contains nothing but the GMC Canyon, archeologists will be able to form a fairly complete picture of the 2025 mid-size pickup truck market. Off-roading is big — or at least the perceived capability to do so is — so the Canyon’s AT4X option, which is already a more extreme evolution of the mud-and-rocks-focused AT4 trim, gains an available snorkel for fording deep water.

And as the black-out treatment is still riding a wave of popularity, a new Nightfall Edition Package adds black badges and 20-inch wheels to the AT4, as well as a bed-mounted sports bar and rocker-panel protectors. Beyond a Bed Pro Utility Package that includes brackets, latches and straps for tying down cargo, the Canyon is unchanged for the 2025 model year. But if the diggers of the future scrape away one more strata, they’ll see that the market was strong enough to support a $2,100 price increase from the 2024 Canyon.

Powertrain Specs and MPG

Like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma, the Canyon is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Unlike in the Ranger, which offers a twin-turbocharged V-6, and the Tacoma, which is available as a hybrid, the Canyon’s only available engine is the 310-horsepower, 2.7-liter turbo four that’s good for 430 pounds-feet of torque. That’s just 5 fewer horsepower and 30 pounds-feet more torque than the Ranger’s V-6 and 16 hp and 35 pounds-feet less than the hybrid Tacoma.

The Canyon’s 2.7-liter is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard on the entry-level Elevation trim; four-wheel drive is a $3,300 option on the Elevation and standard on the AT4 and Denali. Fuel economy numbers for 2025 are not yet available, but the 2024 rear-drive Elevation returns an EPA-rated 19/23/20 mpg city/highway/combined, while the 4WD trucks are rated at 18/22/19 mpg; fuel economy for the off-road-oriented AT4X drops to 17/17/17 mpg. The 2024 Ford and Toyota both outperform the Canyon by an mpg or two, while the (pricey) Tacoma hybrid bests the GMC in both output and efficiency, returning a best of 23/24/24 mpg.

Availability and Pricing

The 2025 GMC Canyon is on sale now. Full line pricing, including the $1,595 destination fee, is as follows:

  • Elevation: $39,995
  • AT4: $47,295
  • Denali: $53,595

Safety Features and Trim Levels

Standard safety tech on the Canyon includes forward collision alert with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane departure steering assist, blind spot intervention with trailer coverage, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, a following distance indicator, rear parking sensors and a rear-seat reminder.

The base Elevation trim features 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, LED head- and taillights, heated side mirrors, and keyless entry and starting. It’s upholstered in cloth and has manually adjustable front seats, six speakers, an 11-inch digital instrument cluster, and an 11.3-inch touchscreen with Google Built-In and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

In addition to its standard 4WD, the AT4 gets red recovery hooks, a spring-assisted tailgate for easier opening and closing, and remote start. It also features comfort upgrades like synthetic leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats and dual-zone automatic climate control.

“Denali” being GMC’s synonym for “loaded,” the range-topping Canyon is equipped with perforated leather, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a head-up display, a seven-speaker Bose sound system and wireless phone charging. It also gets more safety features, including a 360-degree parking camera, adaptive cruise control and GM’s Safety Alert Seat, which vibrates the driver’s seat bottom cushion to notify them of potential hazards. Twenty-inch wheels, chrome exterior trim, running boards and a spray-in bedliner distinguish the Denali from cheaper Canyons.
