Expert 2023 BMW Z4 review

our expert's take

What Is the 2023 BMW Z4?

The BMW Z4 is a two-occupant droptop sports car with rear-wheel drive and a choice of two engines: a 255-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder or a 382-hp, turbo 3.0-liter inline-six. Both are paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters affixed to the steering wheel. Fun to drive and surprisingly composed with its top raised, the Z4 even boasts a decent-size trunk, measuring around 9.9 cubic feet in capacity.

If you want something edgier — and the option of a manual transmission — the Toyota Supra is worth considering. The current Z4 and Supra were co-developed by BMW and Toyota, and they share the same platform and powertrains. Additional rivals include the Audi TT, Porsche’s 718 Cayman and Boxster, and the Chevrolet Corvette.

What’s New on the 2023 BMW Z4?

The Z4 gets minor exterior styling updates, and the M Sport Package is newly standard on the entry-level sDrive30i trim. The package adds a sport-tuned suspension and M Sport steering wheel. Other minor updates include a new 19-inch wheel design and three new exterior colors: Skyscraper Grey Metallic, Portimao Blue Metallic and Thundernight Metallic.

What Features in the 2023 BMW Z4 Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • Power-folding top with heated glass rear window
  • 10.25-inch digital instrument panel
  • 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity
  • Two USB ports
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • LED headlights
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • Forward collision warning with city collision mitigation
  • Automatic high-beam headlights

Available features include:

  • Heated seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Adaptive suspension
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Head-up instrument display
  • 12-speaker Harman Kardon stereo
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning
  • Blind spot warning

Should I Buy the 2023 BMW Z4?

The Z4 delivers a great blend of driving excitement and everyday usability. Sure, some direct competitors are quicker through corners or around a sinuous racetrack, but this BMW’s classy cabin, spacious-for-a-two-seater trunk and hushed top-up soundtrack make the Z4 so much more than a weekend plaything. The standard turbo four is peppy, but the optional turbo six gives the Z4 the speed and performance of a true sports car.
