bmw x7 2023 P90457500 008 dynamic exterior front angle grey suv scaled jpg

BMW refreshed the three-row X7 SUV for 2023 with upgraded engines incorporating mild-hybrid assistance, revised front and rear styling, and upgrades to the interior tech package. For the 2024 model, a few late-arriving tech features put the finishing touches on the facelifted X7, which now starts at $82,895 (all prices include $995 destination charge).

What’s New

For 2024, the Dynamic Handling Package is no longer available on the xDrive40i trim. Otherwise, three new technology upgrades are options: Highway Assistant is now part of the optional Driver Assistance Package and allows for hands-free driving at speeds up to 85 mph on limited-access highways, and Parking Assistant Professional now allows owners to use their smartphone to remotely guide their X7 in and out of tight parking spaces. On the outside, Crystal Headlights (accurately named, they’d be called Crystal Daytime Running Lights and Side Marker Lights) use LEDs to backlight real Swarovski crystals for a unique, multifaceted lighting pattern.

Powertrain Specs and MPG

The X7 is available with three engines: a twin-turbocharged inline-six-cylinder, a twin-turbocharged V-8 and a higher-output twin-turbo V-8 in the Alpina XB7. All are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission; all-wheel drive is standard. The X7 xDrive40i’s 3.0-liter inline-six makes 375 horsepower and 398 pounds-feet of torque; it gets an EPA-estimated 21/25/22 mpg city/highway combined. In the X7 M60i, a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 whips up 523 hp and 553 pounds-feet; while a tweaked version of the same engine delivers 631 hp and 590 pounds-feet in the Alpina XB7 high-performance model. The M60i’s fuel economy is estimated at 16/21/18 mpg; the Alpina is rated at 16/20/17 mpg.

Availability and Pricing

The 2024 BMW X7 is on sale now. Full pricing is as follows:

  • xDrive40i: $82,895
  • M60i xDrive: $109,695
  • Alpina XB7: $150,395

Trim Levels and Safety Features

Active Driving Assistant (distinct from Highway Assistant) is standard on every 2024 X7. It includes forward collision warning with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitors, lane departure warning and road-sign recognition.

The base X7 xDrive40i rides on 21-inch wheels and a standard air suspension. It also gets keyless entry and start, a panoramic moonroof, four-zone automatic climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats and steering wheel, a head-up display, navigation, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and wireless phone charging.

A 360-degree camera system and automated parking are standard on the M60i, as are 22-inch wheels and blue brake calipers, an illuminated grille and rear-wheel steering. The M60i’s soft-close doors catch and automatically close themselves the last little bit to prevent slamming, and it gets a 16-speaker Harmon Kardon surround-sound system and real leather seating.

In addition to the 630-hp, twin-turbo V-8, the Alpina XB7 adds lane departure steering assist. Other upgrades include heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, heated rear seats, five-zone climate control and unique glass pieces for the shifter, engine start button and infotainment control knob.

Versus the Competition

Aside from the Mercedes-Benz GLS, most of the X7’s competitors in the full-size three-row SUV class ride on frames derived from pickup trucks. Its most direct competition, the GLS, starts at $88,150 (prices include destination). The Cadillac Escalade bases at $83,890; its crosstown rival, the Lincoln Navigator, starts at $84,760. From across the Pacific, the Infiniti QX80 starts at $76,045 and the Lexus LX 600 at $93,915.
