What Is the 2022 BMW X5?

The BMW X5 mid-size luxury SUV seats five or seven, depending on the seating configuration. It’s available with rear- or all-wheel drive and is powered by a standard 335-horsepower, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine or a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 that makes 523 hp in the M50i and 600 to 617 hp in the X5 M. A plug-in hybrid variant is also available. All versions have an eight-speed automatic transmission, and competitors include the Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Land Rover Range Rover Sport

What’s New on the 2022 BMW X5?

The limited-edition Black Vermilion variant of the xDrive40i model joins the lineup this year. It features 22-inch alloy wheels and is painted black with red-accented grille bars and brake calipers. The black-and-red color scheme carries over to the cabin, which is finished in black leather with red piping and accent stitching. Around 350 units are destined for the U.S.

What Features in the 2022 BMW X5 Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • Digital instrument panel
  • 12.3-inch multimedia screen
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity
  • Navigation
  • Panoramic moonroof
  • 40/20/40-split second-row seat
  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Blind spot warning
  • Lane departure warning
  • Automatic high-beam headlights

Available features include:

  • Remote start
  • Head-up display
  • 360-degree camera system
  • Low-speed hands-free driving system
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Heated front and second-row seats
  • Ventilated and massaging front seats

Should I Buy the 2022 BMW X5?

The X5 is a luxurious, comfortable and quick luxury SUV. However, some of its active-safety systems can be too sensitive, and the optional gesture-based control system is gimmicky. The third-row seat is handy, but bear in mind that the space is best left to kids.

Mixed bag for us

Our 2022 X5 was a beautiful car to us. Unfortunately it didn't work for us as my wife is handicapped and found it difficult to get in and out of - it's higher than one would expect and came to realize the seats are more inboard than other cars that are direct competitors. The 3 inch door sill was almost like a running board and contributed to her struggles. Even though we had the multi-contour seats, we found the lower cushion seat side bolsters too firm for any drive more than an hour. The seat back was fine. While driving around town and 2 lanes was great, it didn't track as well on the highway as one would expect, even after an alignment (it was off at delivery). Our old Volvos were much better in that regard. The positives include the exterior and interior design/layout, the quality, ride, handling and power. It also still has a few buttons, albeit a bit small when driving. The headlights were awesome and the gas mileage was better than expected, 21 around town and 28+ on the highway. Our situation is unique, and after 7 months we sold the car to a tall, able bodied couple.

2022 X5 Sdrive 4.0

Only had the X5 for 4 weeks now but so far it is an awesome vehicle that runs and drives great. It appears to be very well built with good body lines and fit. Some of the safety features and electronic systems take some time to get set up properly for the best driving experience but the reward is well worth the time as everything is customizable for two drivers. Only bad thing is that a mower along the roadside threw a stone and put a chip in our paint and the paint isn’t self healing.
