BMW X7 M60i 2025 exterior oem 01 jpg

Shoppers looking for three-row luxury SUVs ultimately find themselves considering two different automotive genera. There’s the size-matters school, which is largely populated by domestic manufacturers — although Nissan and Toyota play in this arena, too, with the Armada and Sequoia — and epitomized by the nearly 19-foot-long, truck-based Cadillac Escalade ESV. Then there’s the we-can-do-it-too camp of unibody entries from foreign luxury mainstays like BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

BMW’s entry, the X7, is one of the finest of this breed. Revised just two model years ago, the three-row BMW SUV is largely unchanged for the 2025 model year beyond an optional function that tracks the driver’s eyes and will automatically change lanes on the highway after they look at the appropriate side mirror.

Powertrain Specs and MPG

Three engines are available in the 2025 X7. The entry-level xDrive40i is powered by a mild-hybrid twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six making 375 horsepower and 398 pounds-feet of torque. A mild-hybrid twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 propels the M60i with 523 hp and 553 pounds-feet, and a more potent version of the same V-8 infuses the Alpina XB7 with 630 hp and 590 pounds-feet. That’s not quite as much power as the supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 in the Escalade-V, but the XB7 is about 400 pounds lighter. BMW also says the Alpina will accelerate from 0-60 mph in less than 4 seconds; the V will not. An eight-speed automatic transmission backs all three engines, and all-wheel drive is standard across the line.

The xDrive40i returns an EPA-rated 20/24/22 mpg city/highway/combined, while the M60i is rated at 16/20/18 mpg. The Alpina is rated at 16/20/17 mpg; if you’re still comparing, the Escalade-V gets 11/17/13 mpg.

Availability and Pricing

The 2025 BMW X7 is on sale now. Full line pricing, including the destination fee ($1,175 for the regular X7s and $995 for the Alpina), is as follows:

  • xDrive40i: $85,475
  • M60i: $113,075
  • XB7: $153,395

Safety Features and Trim Levels

BMW’s Active Driving Assistant is standard on every 2025 X7 and includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot intervention, lane departure warning, road-sign recognition, and front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking.

Additional standard equipment on the xDrive40i includes 21-inch wheels, adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams, a panoramic moonroof, a power liftgate, rain-sensing windshield wipers, keyless entry and starting, and remote start. Inside the cabin are synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats and steering wheel, four-zone automatic climate control and ambient lighting. The standard tech suite consists of a head-up display, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless phone charging, 10 speakers, and a 14.9-inch touchscreen with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The M60i is a sportier BMW and is fitted with unique front and rear bumpers, more aggressive sill panels, 22-inch wheels, upgraded brakes with blue calipers, a sport exhaust, an air suspension and rear-wheel steering. The M60i also features standard automated parking, a 360-degree parking camera, soft-close doors, gesture control for the infotainment system, leather upholstery and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

The Alpina XB7 also rides on an air suspension but with specific, sportier tuning. It features a unique exterior trim package with distinctive front and rear bumpers, 23-inch wheels, satin-aluminum trim and upgraded headlights. Tech upgrades include lane-centering steering, traffic-jam assist and BMW’s hands-free Highway Assistant semi-autonomous driving tech with automated lane changes. Inside, the Alpina XB7 boasts Nappa leather upholstery, black walnut wood trim, glass control knobs, ventilated and massaging front seats, and five-zone automatic climate control.
