A plug-in hybrid 740e is also available; it features all-wheel drive and pairs a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor.

The 740i and 750i are available with rear- or all-wheel drive. The M760i has all-wheel drive, as does the B7. Competitors include the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8 and Lexus LS. An updated 7 Series debuts as a 2020 model.
